Is It Safe to Drink Coffee After a Tooth Extraction?
February 2, 2025

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages on the planet – meaning if you can’t go most days without the energizing jolt that it provides you, you certainly aren’t alone! That said, if you’ve recently undergone tooth extraction, you may be wondering how your coffee-drinking habit will be impacted. Even though tooth extractions are common and straightforward procedures, you’ll want to be sure you’re taking great care of your mouth to ensure a quick recovery, and this includes refraining from drinking coffee immediately. Here’s what you need to know.
Why You Should Avoid Drinking Coffee Following Tooth Removal
The primary problem with drinking coffee following a tooth extraction is that the beverage is often served hot and is high in sugar and acid content, which means it can increase the risk of a condition called dry socket. Dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot that forms over your tooth extraction site becomes dislodged; since the clot is needed to protect the site during healing, if something happens to it, the result is considerable pain, discomfort, and a bad taste in your mouth. To avoid this painful condition and ensure a quick and smooth recovery period, it’s best to refrain from drinking coffee for several days.
Suitable Alternatives to Coffee Following Your Tooth Extraction
It’s incredibly important to stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet when recovering from any sort of procedure, large or small, and tooth extractions are no exception. Water is always going to be your best bet; it’s the best beverage for your body and your oral health, so be sure to drink plenty. Just don’t use a drinking straw, as this can also disrupt your blood clot. Also, try to avoid drinking anything carbonated, ultra-sugary, or acidic.
In addition to water, stock up on plenty of soft and liquid foods to eat throughout the week. Bland, easy-to-chew foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, pudding, yogurt, and other similar items are great options. Protein shakes and room-temperature soups and broths can also be consumed.
Assuming your healing process goes well, it’s best to wait about a week before reintroducing coffee, but if you have doubts or things don’t seem to be healing as expected, hold off and let your dentist know!
