United Healthcare Coverage Availability & Fees

United Healthcare has a wide variety of dental insurance plans, which means your coverage availability and fees will ultimately depend on the specifics of your unique policy. That said, the vast majority of their plans offer 100% coverage for preventive services like checkups and cleanings. These preventive benefits aren’t limited by deductibles and waiting periods. Coverage for basic services (fillings, emergency treatment, etc.) and major services (retainers, root canals, etc.) will offset most of your costs, but are often subject to a deductible or coinsurance.

We understand that dental insurance can be confusing, so here’s a brief overview of what different terms mean:

A deductible is the amount of money you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket before specific coverage “kicks in.” For example, if you have a $1,200 deductible, you’ll have to spend $1,200 on dental services, and then United Healthcare will provide coverage for basic and major treatments.

Coinsurance is the percentage of your treatment costs that you’ll be responsible for after you meet your deductible. In other words, if your coinsurance is 20%, and your dental appointment cost $100, you would pay $20, while United Healthcare would pay the remaining $80.

Finally, a waiting period describes an amount of time that has to pass before certain coverage will be applied. A six month waiting period means that the associated services won’t receive any coverage until six months after you’ve purchased your dental insurance plan.
